Tips, from VeiligheidNL, when purchasing a mattress:
• The mattress must be firm. Your child will not be able to lift the mattress themselves or get under the mattress.
• The mattress should fit well in the crib. You should be able to place the mattress in the crib easily, but there should be no space between the mattress and the side walls. Otherwise, your child could get between the mattress and the side of the crib.
• The mattress should not be too soft, because then your child's face can sink into the mattress. Your child can then suffocate. You can check yourself whether the mattress is not too soft: press with a flat hand and a stretched arm on the mattress. If it is good, you should only press the mattress in a little bit.
• The mattress must be flat.
• Never buy a mattress with a plastic cover. A disadvantage of plastic is that it is warm. A plastic mattress does not let fresh, clean air through. Your child can suffocate because of it.
• Do not use a mattress with granules. Your child's head will sink into it. If your child rolls onto his stomach, he may suffocate.
