Collecta wild animals: sable antelope The sable antelope mainly eats young or medium-high grass and herbs, but sometimes also eats leaves and shoots. The sable antelope must drink every other day and will therefore rarely be found far from water. It is mainly active early in the morning, late in the afternoon and in the evening. The sable antelope lives in herds of ten to thirty animals, consisting of females with their calves. These herds belong to a larger group of around a hundred animals. Animals from different groups are aggressive towards each other. Males sometimes follow these groups, but they usually live separately from the females in territories. Males regularly fight with other males. They bend their knees and wrestle with their horns. Sometimes an animal is seriously injured, but this is rare. He tries to keep a passing herd in his territory, whereby every female in oestrus is covered.
