Collecta Wild animals musk ox The musk ox is the northernmost ungulate. It is more closely related to goats than to cattle. The musk ox is heavily built. Both the male and the female have horns that cover the top of the skull, just like a buffalo. It has a thick woolly undercoat and an outer coat with very long, hanging hairs, especially in winter. The musk ox owes its name to the strong smell of the males during the mating season. To conquer a harem, rutting males fight by hitting each other hard with their heads. To defend themselves against wolves in particular, a herd sometimes forms a circle around the young animals, with their heads facing outwards.
